In my years of experience with clients that are new to Joomla, I found that many have a problem exactly grasping the concept of Joomla and its Sections, Categories and Articles.

A visualization might help here:

I think Joomla can be seen as a book library. Joomla itself as the main library

Section = the book
Category = a chapter
Article = 1 page in the chapter

1 library can hold many books, (i.e. many sections) 1 book can maintain many chapters (i.e. a section can contain several categories) 1 chapter can have many pages (i.e. a category can contain many articles)
